Stellantis Introduces STLA AutoDrive

Stellantis has just revealed its groundbreaking STLA AutoDrive 1.0, an automated driving system that promises to transform what driving can be. With hands-free and eyes-off capabilities (SAE Level 3), this innovative system is a new cornerstone of Stellantis’ technology strategy, alongside its STLA Brain and STLA Smart Cockpit platforms, allowing the company to redefine vehicle intelligence, automation, and user experience.
STLA AutoDrive is designed to provide drivers with relief during stop-and-go traffic, particularly in urban environments. The system allows for automated driving at speeds up to 37 mph (60 km/h), helping to reduce driver workload while offering the opportunity to reclaim valuable time. Whether it’s watching a movie, catching up on emails, or simply enjoying the scenery, STLA AutoDrive allows drivers to temporarily disengage from driving.
“Helping drivers make the best use of their time is a priority,” said Ned Curic, Stellantis’ Chief Engineering and Technology Officer. “By handling routine driving tasks, STLA AutoDrive will enhance the driving experience, making time behind the wheel more efficient and enjoyable.”
The system is designed for simplicity. Once traffic and environmental conditions are suitable, drivers are notified that STLA AutoDrive is available. By pressing a physical button, drivers can activate the system, which takes control of the vehicle’s speed, steering, and braking while maintaining safe distances and adjusting to the flow of traffic.
For safety and reliability, STLA AutoDrive continuously monitors its surroundings with an advanced suite of sensors, ensuring precise awareness even under challenging conditions, such as night driving, light rain, or road spray. An automated sensor-cleaning system ensures that critical components remain clear, optimizing the system’s performance.
Stellantis engineers have focused on creating a smooth and intuitive experience, ensuring that the system reacts naturally to real-world driving situations. Whether maintaining a safe distance or adjusting to merging traffic, STLA AutoDrive operates seamlessly, providing a stress-free and confident driving experience.
At higher speeds, the system offers additional functionality with Level 2 (hands-on) and Level 2+ (hands-off, eyes-on) modes, incorporating adaptive cruise control and lane centering.
STLA AutoDrive is built on a scalable architecture, meaning it can be deployed across Stellantis-branded vehicles globally. The system is also cloud-connected, allowing for continuous improvements through over-the-air updates, ensuring that the system evolves with time.
While the system currently requires drivers to remain seated, belted, and ready to take control when prompted, STLA AutoDrive is designed as an evolving platform. Future advancements could include hands-free operation at higher speeds (up to 59 mph or 95 km/h) and enhanced off-road automation for select models.
With its focus on safety, adaptability, and long-term evolution, STLA AutoDrive represents a significant step in Stellantis’ quest for smarter, more intuitive driving experiences. As the system continues to develop, it holds the promise of reshaping how we think about mobility.
