Stellantis Signs Memorandum for Battery Recycling

As part of Stellantis’ Dare Forward 2030 strategic plan, the company’s Circular Economy Business Unit is working to majorly increase recycling. The goal is for Stellantis to become a carbon net zero corporation by 2038 across all scopes, and this will take major shifts and changes in many different parts of the automaker’s operations. One of those is battery recycling, and the company has just announced the signing of a memorandum with Orano to establish a joint venture for recycling end-of-life electric vehicle batteries and scrap from some of Stellantis’ largest facilities.

“The United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals has confirmed the need to find solutions like this one with Orano to meet the challenge of natural resource scarcity and sustainability,” said Stellantis Senior Vice President, Circular Economy Business Unit, Alison Jones. “Guided by our Dare Forward 2030 strategic plan, Stellantis is committed to shifting its production and consumption model by fulfilling its circular economy commitment.”

Orano’s innovative, low-carbon technology allows for the recovery of all materials from lithium-ion batteries and the manufacturing of new cathode materials. Entering this joint venture will allow Stellantis to take full advantage of this technology, creating a closed loop supply chain and greatly cutting down on new material consumption as well as carbon emissions.

Thanks to the unique pre-treatment approach and advanced hydrometallurgy technology that Orano uses, their recovery rates of metals can exceed 90%, an astonishing number in this type of recycling. This tech will allow Stellantis to reach high levels of recycling rates, ensuring the sustainability of the business model.

In the early months of 2026, this production process will get underway, reusing existing Stellantis assets and facilities and providing a solution for Stellantis partners, after-sales network, and other OEMs to manage end-of-life batteries and scrap from gigafactories. Investments made by the company in training and preparing Stellantis and Orano employees will open up new assignments and jobs as well.
