Construction Progresses on Stellantis Battery Technology Centre in Ontario

Stellantis has been in the works on a project in Windsor, Ontario for some time now– a brand-new, cutting edge facility called the Stellantis North America Battery Technology Centre. Located at the Automotive Research and Development Centre (ARDC), construction has finally started on the site, with the first of 228 steel structural columns weighing over 800 tons beginning to take shape.

The facility at the North American Battery Technology Centre will span 100,000 square feet and house 35 walk-in climatic test cells for testing up to 63 packs, and 11 reach-in test cells for testing up to 132 cells. The facility will also be able to test batteries through a climatic operation range of -40 degrees Fahrenheit to 176 degrees Fahrenheit. This state-of-the-art facility will be the home base for Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV), Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) and Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) battery production across all of Stellantis’ brands, including Dodge and Ram.

The Battery Technology Centre is part of the major $3.6 billion CAD ($2.8 billion USD) investment that was announced by Stellantis in May 2022. Not only did this investment secure the future of the company’s Windsor and Brampton assembly plants, but the planned expansion of the ARDC allowed the acceleration of Stellantis’ move to a sustainable future. In a similar vein, the company recently celebrated the grand opening of its Battery Technology Center for Europe, in Turin, Italy, part of a global battery development and manufacturing network that will include six gigafactories. It’s all a part of Stellantis’ Dare Forward 2030 strategic plan for sustainability and modernization.
