Stellantis and Ample Announce EV Partnership

December 11th, 2023 by

As electric vehicles become more advanced and more accessible, battery charging still remains a major hurdle for lots of drivers, both individual and commercial. The time it takes to charge a vehicle as opposed to just filling up at the gas station is a big shift to make! Now, by partnering with energy delivery company Ample, Stellantis is working towards integrating a convenient battery swapping technology into its electric vehicles that will allow drivers to attain a full charge in minutes.

Stellantis and Ample announced the agreement that they have entered into together in early December of this year. Ample already has Modular Battery Swapping technology in operation, so the two companies are working together to integrate this solution into electric vehicles like the Ram 1500 REV or the Fiat 500e. The initial tester program for this technology is planned to take place in Madrid, Spain in 2024. A fleet of 100 Fiat 500e’s, the highest-selling electric vehicle in Stellantis’ lineup, will be introduced to Stellantis’ Free2move car sharing service.

“The partnership with Ample is another example of how Stellantis is exploring all avenues that enable freedom of mobility for our electric vehicle customers,” said Ricardo Stamatti, Stellantis Senior Vice President, Charging & Energy Business Unit. “In addition to other projects we are focused on, Ample’s Modular Battery Swapping solution has the opportunity to offer our customers greater energy efficiency, outstanding performance and lower range anxiety. We are looking forward to executing the initial program with our stellar Fiat 500e.”

“At Ample, we believe in the importance of making electric vehicles accessible to everyone without compromises, which is the only way that we will make a significant impact on lowering greenhouse gas emissions. Stellantis’ ambitious electrification goals, its range of electric vehicles, and the commitment of its leadership, make Stellantis a perfect partner in achieving our goals,” said Khaled Hassounah, CEO of Ample. “The combination of offering compelling electric vehicles that can also receive a full charge in less than five minutes will help remove the remaining impediments to electric vehicle adoption. We look forward to working with Stellantis to deploy our joint solution across communities around the world.”

Ample’s Modular Battery Swapping technology allows drivers to do away with the long stretches of time spent at a charging station waiting for their vehicle to be ready to drive again. Instead, Ample’s batteries are designed to function as drop-in replacements for an EV’s original battery, able to fit into any electric vehicle. This allows a driver to simply swap out their depleted battery for a fully charged one and be back on the road again. It’s a fast, cost-effective, and endlessly scalable solution that helps further fulfillment of the company’s Dare Forward 2023 strategic plan to increase EV sales and sustainability. Working with Ample is another step towards Stellantis becoming a carbon net zero corporation by 2038.
