Stellantis Joins North American High-Powered Charging Venture

Stellantis, the maker of Dodge and Ram vehicles, has just become one of seven of the world’s leading automakers to join a group venture to accelerate the transition from gas to electric vehicles in North America by making EV charging more convenient, accessible and reliable. This project will include the development of a new, high-powered charging network with at least 30,000 chargers, designed to make zero-emission driving more accessible for American drivers.

“The creation of EV charging services is an opportunity for automakers to produce excellent user experiences by providing complete, convenient and sustainable solutions for our customers.” said Honda CEO Toshihiro Mibe. “Toward that objective, this joint venture will be a critical step in accelerating EV adoption across the U.S. and Canada and supporting our efforts to achieve carbon neutrality.”

“We intend to exceed customer expectations by creating more opportunities for a seamless charging experience given the significant growth expected in the market,” said Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares. “We believe that a charging network at scale is vital to protecting freedom of mobility for all, especially as we work to achieve our ambitious carbon neutrality plan. A strong charging network should be available for all – under the same conditions – and be built together with a win-win spirit. This joint venture between Stellantis, BMW, GM, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, and Mercedes-Benz will leverage public and private funds to accelerate the process of installing high-powered charging stations across the country. These stations will be accessible to all battery-powered electric vehicles, meaning any make of vehicle that uses the Combined Charging System (CCS) or North American Charging Standard (NACS) can access them. The stations are expected to meet or exceed the spirit and requirements of the U.S. National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program. The goal is for this network of charging stations to eventually become the leading network in the nation. In accordance with the sustainability goals of the automakers involved in this venture, the intention is for the network to be powered entirely by clean energy sources.

The joint venture is expected to be established during the course of the year, and the first charging stations are expected to open in the U.S. in the summer of 2024. Multiple high-powered DC chargers will be available at each site, facilitating long-distance travel in EVs.
