Ford Introduces Home Charging Initiative for Savings and Sustainability

September 1st, 2023 by

In a significant stride towards advancing the electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem, Ford has unveiled a pioneering pilot program in partnership with Duke Energy. This initiative is poised to empower EV customers within Duke Energy’s service area by offering them an opportunity to not only save on costs but also contribute to the expansion of renewable energy adoption and bolster electric grid resiliency, all while enjoying the convenience of home charging.

The crux of the initiative, known as the EV Complete Home Charging Plan pilot, revolves around ensuring a predictable and affordable monthly rate for the electricity utilized in charging EVs, in return for granting Ford and Duke Energy the capability to manage the charging schedule strategically for optimal grid support.

Central to the program’s objectives is the enhancement of electric grid resiliency through seamless management of home charging schedules. By intelligently synchronizing charging times during periods of reduced grid demand and increased availability of renewable energy, this initiative stands as a remarkable step towards achieving a more balanced and sustainable energy infrastructure.

Notably, the scope of the pilot program extends its benefits to not only Ford EV customers but also encompasses EV drivers from other automotive giants such as GM and BMW. Beginning in September, these customers will be extended an invitation to join the program, with the official launch of the EV Complete Home Charging Plan pilot slated for November 1.

Bill Crider, the head of global charging and energy services at Ford Motor Company, emphasized the transformative potential of the connectivity features inherent in their EVs. He remarked, “The connectivity features offered in our electric vehicles are revolutionizing the customer experience by creating easy opportunities to save money, support the electric grid and drive toward zero-carbon charging.” Crider lauded the collaboration with Duke Energy as a testament to Ford’s unwavering commitment to enhancing the ownership experience for its customers, while also aligning with broader goals of sustainable grid management and environmental stewardship.

This forward-looking initiative is underpinned by a shared vision between Ford and Duke Energy, focusing on the dual aspects of affordability and environmental responsibility. By establishing a fixed and competitive monthly rate for EV home charging, customers gain the advantage of cost predictability, eliminating potential fluctuations in electricity bills.

In exchange for this advantageous pricing model, participants agree to allow Ford and Duke Energy to optimize charging schedules in alignment with grid conditions. This dynamic approach ensures that charging occurs during periods of lower grid demand, which not only helps stabilize the grid but also taps into the availability of surplus renewable energy during such times.

By bringing together a consortium of major automotive players such as Ford, GM, and BMW, this program carries the potential to make a substantial impact on the EV landscape. The seamless integration of smart charging strategies with large-scale vehicle adoption plays a pivotal role in driving sustainability forward.

As the world shifts towards cleaner mobility solutions, collaborations of this nature bridge the gap between private sector innovation and utility sector grid management, fostering a harmonious ecosystem that benefits consumers, automakers, and energy providers alike.

Ford’s pioneering initiative in collaboration with Duke Energy heralds a new era for EV charging dynamics. By providing a comprehensive solution that amalgamates cost savings, grid sustainability, and environmental consciousness, this program showcases the remarkable potential of partnership between the automotive and energy sectors. With a strong emphasis on customer experience and shared sustainability goals, this pilot program could well pave the way for a more efficient, resilient, and eco-friendly energy future.
