2027 Ram Chassis Cab Goes Dark With New Night Edition

Ram is bringing some added personality to its hardest-working trucks for 2027. The Ram 3500, 4500 and 5500 Chassis Cab lineup will offer a new Night Edition package, extending the blacked-out styling already familiar on Ram 1500 and Heavy Duty pickups to the brand’s commercial models. Available on Big Horn and Laramie trims, the package gives business owners a way to combine serious capability with a more distinctive factory appearance.

A New Look for Ram’s Commercial Workhorses

Chassis cab trucks are usually chosen for what they can accomplish rather than how they look, but Ram sees an opportunity to offer both. The Night Edition replaces much of the traditional chrome and brightwork with darker accents, creating a more modern and aggressive appearance.

On Big Horn models, the package includes black-painted wheels, black badging, gloss-black grille accents and a sport hood. Body-color treatments extend to the grille surround, front bumper, fender flares and door handles, while front and rear park sensors are also included. Laramie models already receive several of those body-color components and park sensors as standard equipment, so the Night Edition focuses on black wheels, badging, grille details and the sport hood.

The idea is especially relevant for commercial customers because a work truck often represents a company everywhere it goes. Contractors, construction companies, service businesses and other operators can essentially use their trucks as mobile advertisements, making appearance more important than it might initially seem.

HEMI and Cummins Power Remain at the Core

Although the Night Edition changes the appearance of the Chassis Cab, the lineup retains the powertrains designed for demanding commercial applications. Buyers can choose a 6.4-liter HEMI V8 producing 375 horsepower and 429 lb-ft of torque or a 6.7-liter Cummins Turbo Diesel inline-six producing 360 horsepower and 800 lb-ft of torque. Both engines are paired with a TorqueFlite HD eight-speed automatic transmission.

Capability varies by model and engine, but the numbers reinforce the Chassis Cab’s work-focused mission. A properly configured Ram 5500 with the Cummins diesel can tow up to 34,540 pounds, while its maximum payload reaches 11,490 pounds. The HEMI-powered Ram 5500 can carry as much as 12,370 pounds of payload, giving businesses choices depending on whether towing strength or carrying capacity is the greater priority.

Designed With Upfits in Mind

One of the Chassis Cab lineup’s biggest advantages remains its flexibility. Ram offers four cab-to-axle frame lengths of 60, 84, 108 and 120 inches, along with industry-standard 34-inch frame rail spacing. The rear frame uses a flat C-channel design intended to simplify the installation of commercial bodies and equipment.

Ram also keeps the area above the frame rails free of interfering components and provides pre-drilled mounting points throughout the structure. That makes it easier to transform a Chassis Cab into a dump truck, service vehicle, flatbed, tow truck or another specialized work vehicle without unnecessary complications during the upfitting process.

More Technology for Long Workdays

The 2027 lineup also brings useful driver-assistance technology to commercial customers. Available features include adaptive cruise control, Forward Collision Warning, Automatic Emergency Braking and Automatic Emergency Braking with trailer braking. Ram says these systems are available across every Chassis Cab trim level.

The truck can also monitor as many as six tires on the vehicle itself and tire pressure for up to 12 trailer tires. For drivers who may spend long days towing equipment between jobsites, that added information can make it easier to keep track of the truck and trailer as a complete working system.

The Night Edition will be available on Ram 3500, 4500 and 5500 Chassis Cab models in both Regular Cab and Crew Cab configurations. Orders are scheduled to open during the fourth quarter of 2026, with availability expected later in the year.
